Earn Money from YouTube
YouTube pays creators through several channels. Ads are the first source. They are rarely the largest. You earn more when you stack income streams and treat each video as a business asset.
Meet the Partner Program Requirements
The YouTube Partner Program (YPP) opens ad revenue and fan funding. You need one of these thresholds:
- 1,000 subscribers and 4,000 public watch hours in the past 12 months
- 1,000 subscribers and 10 million public Shorts views in the past 90 days
A lower tier starts at 500 subscribers. It requires three public uploads in 90 days, plus 3,000 watch hours or 3 million Shorts views. This tier gives you memberships, Super Chat and Super Thanks.
Turn on two-step verification. Follow the monetization policies. Apply in YouTube Studio.
Pick a Niche With Paying Viewers
Advertisers pay more to reach some audiences. Revenue per 1,000 views (RPM) differs by niche. Finance and business channels often earn $10 to $30 RPM. Gaming and entertainment channels often earn $1 to $4. Rates differ by country and season.
Compare two channels with 100,000 views each. At $20 RPM, the first earns $2,000. At $3 RPM, the second earns $300. Choose a topic where viewers have buying intent.
Test your niche with three questions:
- Do you know the topic well enough to film 50 videos?
- Do viewers search for it every month?
- Do businesses sell products to this audience?
Earn From Ad Revenue
YouTube pays creators 55% of ad revenue on long-form videos. Shorts pay from a shared pool, and creators receive 45% of their allocated share. Shorts pay far less per view. Use Shorts to attract subscribers. Use long videos to earn.
Videos over eight minutes allow mid-roll ads. Place them at natural breaks. Do not stack ads back to back. Viewers leave.
Sell Sponsorships
Sponsorships often pay more than ads. Brands pay for access to your audience. Many creators charge $20 to $50 per 1,000 views for a dedicated integration.
A video with 20,000 views at $30 per 1,000 views earns $600 per sponsor slot. Four videos a month bring $2,400.
Follow these steps:
- Build a media kit with views, watch time, audience country and age.
- Email 20 brands your viewers already buy from.
- Offer a clear deliverable, such as a 60-second integration.
- Disclose every paid promotion.
Earn Affiliate Commissions
Place product links in your description. Amazon Associates pays 1% to 10% depending on category. Software companies often pay 20% to 40% in recurring commissions.
Review videos and comparison videos convert best. Take a software tool at $30 a month with a 30% commission. Each referred customer pays you $9 monthly. Fifty customers pay you $450 every month.
Disclose affiliate links in your description and on screen.
Sell Your Own Products
Your own products give you the highest margin. Sell any of these:
- Digital templates
- Online courses
- Coaching sessions
- Ebooks
- Merchandise
Start with the question your viewers ask most. Build a product to answer it. Put the link in your pinned comment and in the first line of your description.
Take a $50 course. If 0.5% of 50,000 monthly viewers buy it, you earn $12,500.
Add Fan Funding
Memberships, Super Chat and Super Thanks bring money straight from viewers. Offer members early access, a private community or bonus videos. Set tiers at $2.99, $4.99 and $9.99.
You keep 70% of membership revenue. One hundred members at $4.99 earn you about $349 a month.
Build a Publishing System
Consistency drives growth. Follow this routine:
- Publish one video per week at the same time.
- Write the title and thumbnail before you film.
- Show the result in the first 15 seconds.
- Review the retention graph in YouTube Studio after each upload.
- Cut the sections where viewers leave.
Target a click-through rate of 4% to 10%. Target an average view duration above 40% of video length. Raise both numbers with each upload.
Avoid Common Mistakes
- Reusing other creators’ content. YouTube rejects reused content for monetization.
- Buying subscribers or views. This violates policy and destroys your retention data.
- Relying on one income source. Policy changes and RPM drops hurt single-stream channels.
- Quitting before video 30. Most channels grow slowly at first.
Start This Week
Take these actions in order:
- Choose one niche with high RPM and clear buying intent.
- Write 20 video titles from YouTube search suggestions.
- Publish your first three videos within 30 days.
- Track subscribers, watch hours and RPM every week.
